Christ Church

3008 Carp Road, Carp

In 1838 John Cavanagh deeded 5 chains 17 links  (approx 1 acre) of his farm land to the Bishop of Quebec for an English Church to be built.  Included in the deed was the stipulation that “the above John Cavanagh was to have pew No. 1 on the south side of the said church.” Today this pew is still used by the Cavanagh family.

In 1938 Christ Church celebrated its 100th anniversary. The stone cairn was built in front of the church to commemorate this event, and it was dedicated to honour the memories of the pioneer men and women of the district and the Parish who founded Christ Church.

Christ Church is an iconic part of Huntley and is infused with history and beauty.

Christ Church

3008 Carp Road, Carp

In 1885, John and Susan Mooney Reid donated a portion of land from their property for the construction of St John’s.  The first service was held in 1886 and it was formally consecrated in December 1888.

St John’s is a beautiful small brick church with a steep pitched roof, graced with beautiful large stain glass windows that draw colour into the building. The ambiance is of quiet peacefulness. The same silver communion vessels have been in use from the first service, reflecting the continuity and companionship of their membership. St John’s has been blessed with a close knit and supportive congregation that continues to work and gather together in support of the church as well as the lives of its members.

The church (officially made a chapel in 2017) is home to some of the most beautiful stained glass windows to be seen in the entire capital region.

St James the Apostle

On January 3rd, 1889, George Nelson Kidd and his wife Esther Elvira Young donated to the church the north half of lot 18, concession 2, in Carp village.  Construction moved quickly Arthur Johnston and Jack Lett drew stone from a quarry on the Johnston farm, (later the George Dolan farm).  The corner stone and sills were brought in from Carleton Place.  The church is a model of Gothic construction.  Windows are recessed 20” into the walls.  Two years after construction, St James was debt free. The church was consecrated December 18th, 1882 by the Reverend John Travis.

Many beautiful memorials dedicated to the glory of God, in memory of loved ones, have been received by St James Church.

Our Cemeteries

The land for the St. James cemetery was purchased in 1919 from Thomas Argue at a cost of $3000.  From the front of the property two building lots were severed and sold for $1500.  On June the 10th, 1921, the cemetery was consecrated by Bishop Roper.  A vault was built in 1960 and in 1966 two acres of land were purchased from E Honeywell for an extension of the cemetery.  In 2004 a columbarium was erected.

The cemetery is a beautiful and peaceful area, a tribute to those who planned and those who care for it.  St. James church is a village landmark where we belong, grow and serve our Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ Church cemetery has the oldest graves and stones in Huntley. The grave yard surrounds the church and provides easy access for friends and families to pay tribute to their loved ones.  The grounds are lovingly cared for by our parishioners.
